Warrior Hockey Tournament in Detroit, MI

I had such a great time in Detroit!  The Warrior Hockey Tournament was a great experience and the Phoenix Firebirds got to play some top notch teams.  The Firebirds beat the Michigan Nationals 5-2, but lost to the Mississauga Reps 5-4 and Comcast 4-0, but we tied Victory Honda 1-1.  Not a bad showing for a team from Arizona, eh?

#13 Datsyuk

While we were in Detroit; my mom and I went to Hockey Town Cafe for lunch.  Afterward,  we grabbed some Detroit Tigers play-off game tickets.  I met the goalie for the 2000 Little Caesars’ team outside Comerica Park.  By the 7th inning it was time to head for Joe Louis Arena to see a Detroit Red Wings game.  We had great seats and I was able to see Datsyuk up close.  He is one of my favorite players.  Pavel has some sick stick-handling hands and is an amazing Center!

Max, Adrian & Murph

The biggest highlight for me, was seeing some of my former teammates from the Florida Jr. Panthers.  They were playing in the Elite 99 division at the tournament, they now play as the Florida Alliance.

Skate Sharpening

The guys at Novi Ice Rink did an amazing job sharpening my skates, great cut!  I had a great time in Detroit, and highly recommend the Warrior Hockey Tournament.

Hill Hockey Clinic

Hill Hockey Clinic

I wanted some extra ice time before leaving for the Warrior Hockey Tournament in Detroit, so I attended the Hill Hockey Clinic at Polar Ice Chandler in October.

Eddie Hill, his dad and wife Kelly were running the 4 day hockey clinic. Each session included two hours of ice time, with a 45 minute dry land session.

Resistance Bands

Resistance Bands

On day two of the clinic, Eddie gave me a pair of resistance bands to wear during the ice session. Then he ran me! It was rough.  When I took them off, I felt free and skating felt easier, faster.  I was prepared for the Warrior Tournament.

Eddie Hill is awesome!  Hill Hockey will be coming back to Polar Ice, Chandler, in January 2012 and again for Spring Break in March, I’ll be there for sure!

Heading to Detroit for the Warrior AAA Tournament

Pavel Datsyuk Bobblehead

So pumped for Friday!  The DYHA Firebirds play our first game vs the Michigan Nationals at 9:15am.  Game score sheet here.  This is my first trip to the Warrior AAA Tournament!

Excited for the tournament, but I am bummed that I will miss opening night for the Phoenix Coyotes.  While in Detroit, I’m going to catch the Red Wings vs Vancouver Canucks game.  It’s Pavel Datsyuk bobblehead night at the Joe!!

Travel hockey has taken me to many great hockey cities!

Breaking News – No Checking Until Bantam for USA Hockey

IMG_2086.jpg

USA Hockey postponed full checking until the age of 13 (Bantam)

It looks like Murph and his buddy Colton from the AZ Runners won’t be throwing any checks this year.  Today USA Hockey passed a rule that will allow for more body contact and training in the “pre-checking” years and postponed full checking until the age of 13 (Bantam). The rule change, know as the Progressive Checking Skill Development Program will aim to gradually introduce youth players to the contact aspects of the game in the pre-checking years of development (Mite, Squirt and Pee Wee).

Specifics of the Rule Change (From USA Hockey)

  • It encourages more bodycontact in the pre-bodychecking age categories by providing more training and support for coaches and referees; and encouraging more legal bodycontact in the pre-bodychecking age categories through “Point of Emphasis” rule #1 passed by the Board.
  • It tightens the standard of play for intimidation hits in the legal body checking age categories. Beginning in the 2011-12 season, legal body checking in games will begin at the Bantam age level (ages 13-14).
  • Beginning in 2011-12, each USA Hockey coach will be required to take an age-specific training module which will provide training information consistent with long-term athlete and childhood development principles for the age category the coach will be engaged with. Each module will include training information for body contact and checking.
  • Each season, USA Hockey officials attend clinics that review points of emphasis relating to the standard of play. These 2011-12 clinics will focus on allowing more body contact consistent with the rules in pre-checking age categories and a tighter standard of play for roughing, cross-checking, boarding, charging, high-sticking and other intimidation hits in the legal body checking divisions.
  • USA Hockey will monitor the on-ice management of games with regular reports from local referee-in-chiefs, coach-in-chiefs and Association Coaching and Education (ACE) administrators to USA Hockey’s national office staff in Colorado Springs.
  • USA Hockey will conduct research on the effect of the Progressive Checking Skill Development Program on risk reduction and skill development. The results of the research will be published when completed.
  • The Board also passed rules that prohibit any check that comes in contact with the head or neck. The goal of this rule is to make the player more responsible for actions that make contact to the head or neck similar to rules now in place for stick infractions to the head.

The full article and additional information about the ruling, can be found on the USA Hockey Website.

Murph Celebrates with AZ Runners Line Mates

Love this time of the year! Getting ready for try outs and a new season of hockey.  I was asked to play for the AZ Runners, in the Jr. Ducks Memorial Day Shoot Out Tourney in Anaheim, CA.

After going up against the AZ Runners hard all season, I can’t believe I am wearing their jersey and playing for their team. We had 3 practices prior to leaving for California, I loved the extra ice time and getting to know my new teammates. The players are awesome, I have made so many friends.

My first official tournament as a Pee Wee player and there is checking! I am having a blast. Taking as well as giving some hits! The tournament was a great way for me to get ready for try outs. My game last night was on a sheet of olympic ice, that was some good conditioning! Looking forward to finishing up this tourney strong and learning all there is to learn from my coaches.

Jr. Ducks Tourney is awesome! You can check out our tournament progress on PointStreak here.

Another Travel Hockey Season Comes to and End!

My travel season as a Squirt Player has come to an end.  I am now officially a Pee Wee Player!

The Squirt A Phoenix Polar Bears

I had an amazing season and made some life-time friendships.  On April 4th, the Arizona Hockey Union held their annual End-of-Season Awards Ceremony.  Being named the MVP for my team was an honor!  I was so excited to see a few of my friends that played travel for the first time this season, were also awarded for their hard work and dedication to hockey!

Murph as a Mite

Shocking was the announcement that next season there will be NO more Phoenix Polar Bears and NO more Arizona Heat!  They will unite under the black and purple jersey and become one, known as the Arizona Hockey Union!

Thank you Phoenix Polar Bears for great memories, going all the back to my first travel season as a Mite!  It was a jersey I respected every time I put it on.
