Jr. Coyotes finish 2-2 in Coyote Cup

My team won 2 games in the Coyote Cup Tournament.  The first game vs Vosha Mustangs (7-2) and another against the Phoenix Firebirds (7-0).  We lost to the San Diego Oilers (4-0) and the Peoria Roadrunners (7-4).  We played a good game in our two losses, but it was not enough to win.  Our team ranked 5th in the tournament.

Murph & Pop Pop

In the game against the Roadrunners; I got called for a tripping penalty, but I stopped a breakaway.  The Red Line did great in this tournament and together we had nine goals.  Here are the Squirt B Division Rankings.

This tournament meant a lot to me because my Pop Pop was able to watch me play hockey as a Jr. Coyote.

Murph meets Coyotes Rookies

What a great way to end the day.  I went to a hockey pin trading event held in Scottsdale.  Some of the teams that are playing in the Murph meets Coyotes Rookie BoedkerCoyote Cup Tournament came together tonight to trade their team pins.  I traded my CAHA pins and got some really cool ones from San Diego, Mission Ice AZ, Bay Harbor Red Wings CA, Alaska Wolves, Mat Su Eagles Alaska and the California Stars.

Two of the NHL Coyotes Rookies came to the event to sign autographs.  I met Mikkel Boedker #89, a right winger from Denmark and Viktor Tikhonov #41, another right winger from Latvia.

Hockey all day … all the time!

We had a day off from the tournament, so I had my line mate over to play some hockey.  We took a quick jog aroundimg_1873 the block and then worked on our shots together.  Between the two of us, we netted 300 shots!  It was totally awesome.  My mom was nice enough to retrieve ALL of the pucks, so we could just keep shooting.  We had a small game of one on one and Bunting was goalie, he ROCKS!  Then it was off to play x Box 360 Live NHL.

Late in the afternoon we went up to the Gilbert Rink to catch a 18AA tournament game.  Some of my hockey friends were there and we hung out and watched the game.  Now we are off to the hockey pin trading event.  It was a total hockey day!

First Tournament Win vs Vosha Mustangs

The Squirt B Mustangs came out strong with the first goal of the game. But, once the picture-1Jr. Coyotes #48 scored two goals back to back on one shift in the first period … things quickly changed!  We had a total of three goals in the first period.  We dominated the game, and our goalie only had like 11 shots on him, and their goalie saved 34 of our 41 shots!

This was the first game I played being on the red line and it was awesome, I had a total of 3 points (2 goals/1 assist)!  Our line contributed a total of 4 goals in the game.

Jr. Coyotes win 7-2

Coyote Cup Tournament

We had an awesome practice today!  We are preparing for our Coyote Cup Tournament, a few days after Christmas.  I am now on the RED line, I am excited about that!  Red is the color of energy, the element of fire … img_05971I was feeling it yesterday at practice, back on a line with Bunting.

10 Reasons for Equal Playing Time

equal_playing_time_10_reasonsOn most youth teams, there are players who are physically two or three years ahead of their teammates in size, speed, or strength. These players often form a core of talent that coaches can use to their advantage to win games. Especially in youth travel and select teams, the temptation for many coaches is to use this talent more during a game to go for the win. While this method is appropriate at the highest level of athletic competition, it seldom has any place in youth sports.

In professional sports, players do not get equal playing time. So, when is it appropriate for youth sports to mimic this behavior? One test is when a team is not committed to individual players and rosters may be changed at any time during a season. When teams exist for the team’s sake and not the players’, as is the case in professional and collegiate sports, then coaches are left with no other choice than to give more time to their best players. However, until that test is true, coaches should make sure their player times are equal.
